New Thracian Gold
The beautiful Eastern Rhodope Mountains in Bulgaria are home to one of Europe’s most important biodiversity hotspots, where wilderness, unspoiled nature and numerous archeological sites can be enjoyed, and friendly locals are known for their hospitality and delicious cuisine. However, the area is also facing poverty and abandonement by the local inhabitants.To reduce poverty, conserve biodiversity and strive for new welfare, the Avalon and Ark Foundations recently started a project in this region.

Organic Farming and Livelihood Improvement
How can we improve the food security and livelihood prospects of vulnerable rural communities in Ghana, especially for children? Avalon and SOS Children’s Villages are trying to answer this question by bringing organic agricultural techniques to children and teaching them how to produce their own food.

High Nature Value Farming in Macedonia
The High Nature Value ‘HNV’ farming concept brings an alternative approach to nature conservation. Instead of focusing solely on maintenance of rare or endangered species and habitats on protected sites, it embraces the need for significantly larger areas of land (including a high proportion of semi-natural habitats) being occupied by farmers and managed with traditional farming methods.

Expert Mission to Azerbaijan
The Agro-Information Centre (AIM) in Azerbaijan implements a project to improve the livelihoods of farming families as well as Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in five regions of central Azerbaijan via sustainable agricultural practices, including reclamation of badlands. The project is implemented in the regions of Agjabedi, Beylegan, Barda, Tartar and Zardab. Avalon has assisted AIM to further develop the organic farming component.
